Each of the machines described at Time Systems is a complex
time-based electronic system. Many of the machines propose very
long-term projects which are in effect collaborations between myself and
their owners. I've outlined for you here a few of the key aspects of such systems:
- Electromechanical systems It is of crucial importance to understand
and accommodate the realities of electromechanical
systems. There is a very good reason that a machine such as a television or
computer, which has had millions of dollars of R+D with large teams of
engineers devoting countless hours toward its design and manufacture,
still only has a six month warranty.
- Long-term collaborations Though in some ways designed and presented as self-contained
mechanisms, the machines described at Time Systems are very much
long-term collaborative projects. You (the owner) and I (the
builder) will work together over the lifetime of the project to nurture
and sustain it. This means that the machine will inevitably
return to me several times over the years for maintenance, repair and
upgrades. This is a natural, inevitable and important part of
these long-term electromechanical projects.
- Long-term commitments The owner of each machine must budget the time, energy and financial
resources to sustain the project to its desired conclusion. It is
up to you to decide what that goal is, and I will work with you to reach
it.
- Unique, custom multiples Each of the machines described at Time Systems is a custom multiple.
This means that I make more than one of each type of machine. They
are not, however, an edition. Each machine will vary in form, as
the objects which house the mechanisms are unique. The examples shown on this
site are representative of the type of machine described, but the machine I
make for you will be unique.
- Personal projects Each machine is also custom in its function. While the systems described here
are more or less standard, the content you
dictate (by working with me to create a custom system) or create (through using the machine) will also separate each example from the
other. The longer you are able to sustain your project, the more rare, unique, and
ultimately literally priceless it will become.
- Custom production While I sometimes have examples of the machines available for inspection, each machine
is a custom commission. A 50% deposit is required. Production time is typically
less than one month. This can be accelerated in special circumstances.
- Long-term maintenance All but the simplest
machines will require occasional maintenance and upgrades.
This service is performed at my then-current shop rate, plus
materials. Typical turnaround time is one month. This
can be accelerated in special circumstances
- Custom commissions As with all Time Systems, a
variety of custom variants are available and collaborative
commissions are enthusiastically welcomed.
